To fill a tooth, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area surrounding the tooth. Next, a laser or air abrasion instrument will be used to remove any decayed portion, and your dentist will prepare the space for the filling by thoroughly cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. In certain instances, your dentist may use a glass ionomer liner to protect the tooth and nerve before filling the tooth. After the filling is completed, most dentists will polish the tooth to restore a natural smooth feel.
